A little while ago a couple of guys at work, Jason and Ben, set up a social bookmarking tool within our firewall.  So far this has been the tool that people have picked up on the quickest.  Thinking about it that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since it has the lowest entry barrier and could have a phenomenal return on investment.  It’s turning into a great tool for groups who can now very easily share all the information they come across.

Here’s (a modified version) of the slide deck I’ve been using to try and sell this stuff.

  1. I think that Social Bookmarking is the entry route into the Enterprise 2.0 world for most people – as its easy and v.quick to do and it gives you an instant return on your investment. Blogging and wiki authorship require more effort and the reward is less obvious.

  2. I think I’d agree with you now. When I first thought about it I would have put RSS first, then bookmarking, then wiki and finally blogging.
RSS first because people are used to just taking stuff rather than giving.
Bookmarking second because it’s easy and you can see a fantastic return for very little effort.
Wiki third because it’s a chance to show off what you know.
Blogging last because it will take time for people to get the idea of being open and honest in a corporate environment.
Now I’d go for bookmarking, then RSS close behind and I’m not sure about blogging and wikis yet.

  3. Yeah I think that RSS would be top of my list over bookmarking if it weren’t that you needed to get and configure a reader to get started (which can take days in an Enterprise context)- I guess it all comes down to lowering energy barriers?

  4. What tool did you use? One that you developed yourself? Please share some links :-)

  5. Hi Jacob,

Jason and Ben set it up so you’d be better off asking them any technical stuff but I believe we used scuttle.

There’s quite a few vendors out there now offering Enterprise Bookmarking tools, just have a browse around. You can try Cogenz for a hosted service but if you are link most companies you’ll probably want to keep everything behind your firewall. There is another option which we’ve thought about but it’s name doesn’t spring to mind.

  6. A better and more developed tool is Jumper 2.0 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jumper/) it links more than just web pages with expanded tag fields. And unlike Cogezn you can download it for free!

  7. Ditto. Jumper 2.0 rocks. Best enterprise bookmarking platform out there for two reasons; easy to use and search, bookmark any data (not just web pages), and you can use more than just keywords (ok that’s 3 reasons)…
